James Franco Addresses Oscars Criticism on Late Show with David Letterman

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In a taped appearance on CBS' Late Show set to air Friday night, James Franco and David Letterman swap stories about their poorly-received performances as host of the Oscars. Letterman, who emceed the 1995 Academy Awards ceremony, told Franco of his experience, "It was horrible. I was so bad that they talked for a while about shutting down the motion picture industry." Letterman was widely panned by critics for his Oscars performance, especially for his "Oprah...Uma" joke, in which he introduced Oprah Winfrey to Uma Thurman because of their unique names.

Franco said that some people thought he was under the influence while he co-hosted this year's Oscars with Anne Hathaway. He said, "I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway...She has a lot of energy."

Franco said he did his best with the material he was provided, and he's mystified by what he perceives to be hypocritical complaints about him. He said, "Leading up to the Oscars, I couldn't hear enough about how, 'Oh, people don't care about the Oscars anymore, it's dead, it's boring, it's at the end of a long awards season, who cares about it?'  Well, as soon as you don't host the way they want you to, they suddenly care and they won't shut up about it."
