'Roommate' Wins Slow Box Office Weekend

Image Courtesy - Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The big winners at the box office this weekend were big losers just about everywhere else.

Horror film The Roommate, starring Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl fame, came in first notching $15.6 million, and in a distant second was James Cameron's Sanctum grossing $9.2 million.

Despite their relative successes on the silver screen, the movies tanked with reviewers across the country.

Movie rankings aggregator reported that only 9 percent of critics nationwide recommended The Roommate, which details two women living together in a college dorm. One roommate, played by Minka Kelly, becomes suspicious of the other, Meester, and believes her life is in danger.

Sanctum, Cameron's latest project since 2009's Avatar, scored just a 29 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes. The film follows five divers exploring an underwater cave when it is besieged by a cyclone and they try to escape.

Overall, box office revenues have been down for 13 straight weeks. Super Bowl weekend is also typically slow as moviegoers eschew the lure of the theater in favor of the NFL's championship game.

James Cameron Signs On for Pair of 'Avatar' Sequels

Photo Courtesy - 20th Century Fox(LOS ANGELES) -- Oscar-winning director James Cameron has signed a deal to write and direct two Avatar sequels, reports Variety.  The first feature is going under the title Avatar 2 and could hit theaters in December 2014, while Avatar 3 should enable audiences to return to Pandora in December 2015.

Cameron plans to begin writing the films early next year, with the hope of starting production later in 2011.  It's unclear if Cameron will shoot the movies back-to-back or even simultaneously.

Cameron said, "In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world.  I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Avatar, which came out last December, is the highest-grossing film in history, pulling in $2.8 billion around the world.
