(LONDON) -- British actress Dame Judi Dench is battling to retain her sight after being diagnosed with an eye condition that can cause blindness.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, the 77-year-old actress revealed that she has macular degeneration and her eyesight is already bad. She says family and friends assist her with reading scripts.
Dench made her acting debut in 1957 and has not stopped since. She appeared in Shakespeare plays, as Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown and is well known as M in the James Bond movies.
She was awarded the officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1970 and became a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2005.
