Joan Rivers Refuses to Apologize for Holocaust Joke

(Photo by Angela Weiss/Getty Images)(LOS ANGELES) -- Joan Rivers is facing criticism after she made a joke about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.

Commenting on German model Heidi Klum’s daring Oscar party dress on E!’s Fashion Police Monday, the 79-year-old comedian cracked: “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.”

Rivers, herself Jewish, then doubled over with laughter.

Anti-Defamation League director Abraham Foxman quickly condemned Rivers’ remark.

“Of all people, Joan Rivers should know better. This remark is so vulgar and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors, and indeed to all Americans, that we cannot believe it made it to the airwaves,” Foxman said in a statement on the ADL website. “Making it worse, not one of her co-hosts made any effort to respond or to condemn this hideous statement, leaving it hanging out there and giving it added legitimacy through their silence.

“Almost as bad as her original comment is the fact that she sat there doubled over with laughter after saying it,” Foxman added.

Rivers, however, refuses to apologize.

In a statement to ABC News, she said, “My husband lost the majority of his family at Auschwitz, and I can assure you that I have always made it a point to remind people of the Holocaust through humor.”

Klum has yet to comment on Rivers’ remark. Her rep did not respond immediately to ABC News’ request for comment.

Joan Rivers Starts Small Scuffle at California Costco Store

Angela Weiss/Getty Images(BURBANK, Calif.) -- Comedienne Joan Rivers has made a career out of speaking her mind, so the 79-year-old wasn't going to let a little thing like a ban by Costco stop her from hawking her new book.

Because of concerns over "offensive" material, the bulk retailer won't carry Rivers' latest book, I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me, which has spent more than six weeks on the The New York Times best-seller list.  So Rivers took matters into her own hands on Tuesday, setting up shop at a Costco in Burbank, Calif.

Wearing sunglasses and holding a megaphone as she stood inside, Rivers signed copies of the publication for a crowd of eager fans.  But not long afterward, cops responded to the scene and ordered Rivers to leave.  She complied, and no charges were filed.

In response, Rivers told ABC News affiliate KABC-TV, "Costco, who sells condoms by the pallet, who sells Paula Deen books...which is not good for their customers' health -- they decided to ban my book."

Rivers quipped, "This is a store that sells 300 rolls of toilet paper at the same time, and I say any customer that buys 300 rolls of toilet paper deserves a funny book to sit on the toilet and read."

Joan Rivers Knocks Princess Diana, Shocks British Viewers

Angela Weiss/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Notorious gossip queen Joan Rivers is at it again and, as usual, no one is off limits when it comes to her jokes.

The 79-year-old comedian shocked British viewers Friday when she took a dig at the late Princess Diana on a British-themed episode of her late-night E! talk show, Fashion Police.

‘If you ever want to go to Paris, fly, don’t take the tunnel,” Rivers said on the show. The comment was referencing Princess Diana’s death in 1997 when she crashed in a tunnel during a high-speed car chase.

The usually outspoken comedian was critiquing Kate Middleton, wife of Princess Diana’s son William, when she made the joke that shocked fellow hosts, and Brits Kelly Osbourne and Cat Deeley.

Rob Shuter, host of Naughty But Nice on AXS Live and friend of Rivers, wasn’t surprised by the comedian’s Princess Di dig.

“Joan is not one of those people that censors herself,” Shuter told ABC News. “If she thinks it’s funny, she’s going to say it.”

The comedian, who has made jokes about everyone from Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston, believes nothing is off limits, Shuter said. But the Diana joke launched backlash among British viewers.

“There are plenty of other subjects to make fun about in a show about fashion,” British viewer Andrew Henry told the Daily Star magazine. “But that was one step too far. Cruel, vicious and disgusting.”

Shuter said, “In Britain it’s very shocking. It’s a very different sense of humor over there. I think we’re used to Joan in America.”

Rivers has had a long relationship with Prince Charles, Shuter said.

“She took Kathy Griffin to Buckingham Palace,” Shuter said. “That tells you that Joan Rivers knows them very well.”

The Princess Diana comment was not out of character for Rivers, who Shuter insists has a heart of gold. “When you take these jokes out of context, they’re really jarring,” Shuter said.

“You have to remember the source and it’s Joan.”

Melissa Rivers Wants Joan Rivers to Stop with the Plastic Surgery

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Melissa Rivers thinks the only cutting her mother needs to do from now on is cutting out the plastic surgery.  Rivers says her mother, Joan, needs to stop undergoing cosmetic procedures.  The Orange County Register reports that while speaking to reporters Friday at a press conference to promote their upcoming WE reality show, Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?, Melissa said, "In my opinion, it's like, enough.  Stop it. It is a source of conflict, it really is. It bothers me."

For her part, the 77-year-old Joan has admitted in the past she's gone under the knife more than a dozen times.  Reacting to her daughter's statement, she said plastic surgery is just a way of life in Hollywood, adding, "If you had a dollar for every stitch in the face of someone you interviewed, you wouldn't be here."

Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? premieres Jan. 25.
