John Wayne Memorabilia Auction Tops $5 Million

ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The duke must be riding high in the saddle somewhere.  A two-day auction of actor John Wayne’s movie memorabilia has collected $5.4 million.

Heritage Auctions say the items auctioned off from Wayne’s family included the actor's eye patch from the 1969 original True Grit, a holster and gun from the movie El Dorado, and a cowboy hat Wayne worn in the film Big Jake.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit cancer research. John Wayne died of cancer in 1979.

John Wayne Memorabilia Auction Fetches $5.4M

ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Memorabilia from the late actor John Wayne's estate brought in $5.4 million in a two day auction held in Los Angeles, Calif. on Thursday and Friday. Some items included the star's driver's license and cowboy hat.

The Golden Globe Award won by actor Wayne for his role in "True Grit" (estimated price $50,000-$75,000) is one of more than 700 items memorabilia owned by "The Duke." Also included in the auction was an eye patch worn by Wayne in "True Grit" (estimated price $4,000-$6,000).

Among the other pricier items was the Stetson cowboy hat worn by Wayne in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" -- estimated at $30,000-$40,000.

John Wayne Auction Scheduled for Thursday

ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Hundreds of John Wayne's items, ranging from movie scripts to the actor's iconic eye patch from the original True Grit, will be sold at auction in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Heritage Auctions sale is expected to raise more than one million dollars.

As Ethan Wayne, the actor's youngest son and the director of John Wayne Enterprises, which manages The Duke's images and film rights, puts it, "This is a sale for the fan."
