'Spider-Man' Shows Canceled, Opening Set for June

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic/Getty(NEW YORK) -- The producers of the troubled Broadway show Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark have announced that the show is now scheduled to open on June 14.

Lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris made the announcement Saturday, and also said that there will be no preview shows from April 19 to May 11. The shutdown is reportedly to allow new changes to be implemented and to facilitate rehearsals. The show’s producers also say there will be revisions to the script. Ticketholders for the canceled shows will be refunded.

The $65 million show has now had its opening delayed six times, and before Saturday’s announced date was scheduled to open March 15. Earlier in the week Julie Taymor removed herself as director of the production.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been plagued by injuries to cast members, prompting a government workplace safety inspection and causing at least one injured cast member to quit.

Spider-Man Musical Opening Delayed, Director Steps Down

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic/Getty(NEW YORK) -- Producers of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark say the show's official opening has been delayed until early this summer. It was scheduled to officially open March 15, but producers say the oft-delayed show will undergo creative changes -- and that includes director Julie Taymor removing herself from the day-to-day show operations, though she will remain with the creative team. U2's Bono and Edge, who provided the music for the production, say they will add new songs to the show.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been plagued by injuries to cast members, prompting a government workplace safety inspection and causing at least one injured cast member to quit.  Wednesday's announcement of the show's delayed opening came just hours before a preview performance during which a stunt was canceled because the Green Goblin's steering mechanism failed in mid-flight.

'Spider-Man' Opening Delayed Yet Again

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Broadway's high priced Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark  production continues to be entangled in a web of problems: the opening of the play has been pushed back yet again.

According to published reports, the show, which was set to open on March 15, will now have its opening pushed back by almost three months as producers are reportedly planning a complete overhaul of the show. The musical has been in previews since November, and this is the sixth time the its opening has been delayed. There are also reports of a dispute of between director Julie Taymor and producers about ideas for the show -- and rumors that Taymor, whose Broadway credits include The Lion King, may get the boot.

The production is the most expensive The Great White Way has ever seen, but it has been plagued with a number of technical problems and accidents including an incident where a stunt-double was injured after falling 30 feet into an orchestra pit. To add to its already growing list of woes, the show has also received some poor reviews from critics, and recently, three safety violations from The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

'Spider-Man' Stunt Man On His Feet Again After Fall

Christopher Tierney broke his ribs in a performance Monday when he fell 30 feet, putting the show’s performances on a short hiatus. The show, which has been giving preview performances this month, is still scheduled to open in February.

The musical, directed by Julie Taymor, of “The Lion King” musical fame, is one of the most expensive Broadway productions in history.
