Kathy Bates Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Double Mastectomy

John Shearer/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Kathy Bates has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer several weeks ago and is now recovering from a double mastectomy.

The 64-year-old Oscar winner tells People magazine, "Luckily, I don't have to undergo radiation or chemo.  My family calls me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception."

Bates, who previously battled ovarian cancer about a decade ago, adds that she looks forward to getting back to work.

Bates is nominated for two Emmy Awards: for her work on the since-cancelled NBC series Harry's Law, and for a guest role on the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men.  The Emmys will be held on Sept. 23.

Sheen Will Watch Kathy Bates in His 'Two and a Half Men' Character

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- Charlie Sheen will tune into Two and a Half Men when the show resurrects his deceased character in the form of a ghost, to be played by Kathy Bates.

It was reported earlier this week that Bates will play the ghost of Charlie Harper, which visits Charlie's brother, Jon Cryer's Alan, in the hospital after the latter suffers a heart attack. Charlie was killed off the show early this season due to Sheen's firing.

According to, Sheen is "honored" that Bates is taking on the role because he has great respect for her as an actress. Sources tell the website Sheen will watch her performance on the show.

Charlie Sheen's Character in "Two and a Half Men" Returning?

John Shearer/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Charlie Sheen's Two and a Half Men character is set to return to the CBS sitcom in an episode airing April 30.  Sheen won't reprise the role of Charlie Harper, though.

Instead, it will be Kathy Bates playing Charlie -- actually, the ghost of Charlie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The ghost visits Charlie's brother, Jon Cryer's Alan, in the hospital after the latter suffers a heart attack.

Charlie Harper was killed off in the first episode of the current season due to Sheen's firing from the show.  Ashton Kutcher replaced Sheen and portrays billionaire Walden Schmidt.

New Legal Dramedy 'Harry's Law' Premieres Monday Night

In Harry's Law, the latest series from Boston Legal and Ally McBeal producer David E. Kelley, Bates plays a tough-nosed lawyer named Harriet "Harry" Korn. After losing her job at a law firm, she takes over an abandoned shoe store and starts her own firm. Brittany Snow and United States of Tara actor Nate Corddry also star in Harry's Law, which airs at 10 p.m. ET.
