Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban Close to Deals with "American Idol": Report

Fox(NEW YORK) -- Rapper Nicki Minaj and country superstar Keith Urban may be nearing deals to take the vacant judges’ seats on American Idol, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

THR also said that Minaj and Urban have been in talks with the show for weeks, but Minaj’s involvement was a sticking point, since she has a lucrative endorsement deal with Pepsi, and Coke is a sponsor of American Idol.  But it appears those issues have been resolved, and that Minaj would earn $8 million for her participation on the show, in addition to an extra allowance for wardrobe, hair and makeup.

Urban, who’s married to Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, has reportedly agreed to become a judge for a salary of $3 to $4 million. Mariah Carey, the only officially-announced judge, is said to be getting in the neighborhood of $18 million.

It’s still unclear if original judge Randy Jackson will hang on or become a mentor.  According to THR, if the show’s producers can find another judge for the right price, he might be moved off the panel.

In a related story,  E! News said Miley Cyrus is no longer in consideration for a spot on the show — reportedly, discussions with the star never got very far and she never seriously contemplated taking the job.

Keith Urban to Undergo Throat Surgery

Rick Diamond/Getty Images(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Country star Keith Urban announced Thursday that he will undergo throat surgery later this month to remove a polyp from his vocal cords, forcing the singer to postpone longer performances until after he fully recuperates.

“The surgery, an out-patient procedure, while minor, will require complete voice rest followed by an undetermined period of recuperation that will require the postponement of the ‘All For The Hall’ benefit concert,” an announcement on the Aussie singer’s website said.

The concert, which was scheduled for Jan. 18 in Nashville, was set to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to send Urban, who is married to actress Nicole Kidman, their well-wishes.

“Ur in my prayers for a smooth surgery and speedy recovery!!! We need you out there rocking the stage!!” said fan Chelsea Treser.

“I hope your surgery will go well,” tweeted another fan, Ali Dorn.

One fan pointed out how vocal cord industries seem to be the scourge of the music industry at the moment.

“And so everything happens in 3s. Mayer, Adele, Urban. Yikes!” wrote Amy Pfister.

Singer John Mayer had surgery last month to remove an inflamed nodule from his vocal cords, while songstress Adele recently revealed she is suffering from a vocal cord hemmhorage and will have to undergo surgery.

The British singer wrote she was “heartbroken and worried” by the issues she had been having with her voice, causing her to cancel the remainder of her commitments for the year.

“[S]inging is literally my life, its my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job,” she wrote. “I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or i risk damaging my voice forever.”

A call to Urban’s representative, Paul Freundlich, was not immediately returned.

Keith Urban Opens Up about Addiction, Rehab on 'Oprah'

Photo Courtesy - Capitol Nashville(CHICAGO) -- Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show Monday, and Urban opened up about his decision to go to rehab back in 2006.  Describing his life as unmanageable, he credits Kidman for helping open his eyes to the problem.  He'd been in treatment for substance abuse twice before and recognized the signs of his addiction.

Urban admitted he was abusing cocaine and alcohol before going into treatment, but he tells Winfrey, "It wouldn't have mattered what it was.  It was a hole in my life that was gonna be filled by the right thing eventually, or it was going to always be filled by the wrong thing."

Urban says he wouldn't have blamed Kidman if she'd walked out on him, but she staged an intervention for him instead.  He says, "I couldn't do this just for her, but to see love in action to that degree at that time in that way, I've never experienced anything like that."  Urban has now been clean for four years.

In addition to the interview, Urban also performed his latest single "Put You in a Song" on the show with Winfrey and Kidman singing along on the front row.  It's the lead release from his latest album, Get Closer.
