Former 'DWTS' Contestant Kurt Warner: Chaz Bono Controversy Is Overblown

Steve Granitz/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- Though Dancing with the Stars has caught heat on the Internet after casting Chaz Bono for its upcoming season, one of its former contestants says he has no problem with Cher's transgender son participating in the ABC series.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, a devout Christian who competed on Dancing with the Stars last year, says Bono's critics have lost sight of the fact that the show is supposed to be fun. He tells ABC News Radio, "Too often we get caught up on how can we be offended or how we should judge somebody instead of accepting situations and accepting people for who they are and sitting back and enjoying what that show is."

After the new Dancing with the Stars cast was announced last week, some fans raised their objections to Bono's inclusion on message boards and other websites. Bono will dance for the first time during the Sept. 19 season premiere.

'Dancing with the Stars': Kurt Warner Gets Booted

After getting the bad news, Warner thanked everyone and said the experience had given him an opportunity to impact people and build relationships.  The former football star also thanked his wife and his seven kids, and praised Trebunskaya for allowing him to do something that no one expected him to do.

Before the final vote was announced, Judge Bruno Tonioli praised Warner for his hard work and effort, saying, “You really are an American Idol.”  Host Tom Bergeron responded to Bruno’s comment by saying, “Nice plug for the other network.”

The four remaining couples will compete in the semi-finals, beginning next Monday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
