Gay Actress Says 'Modest Kiss' Led to Removal from Southwest Plane

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Openly gay actress Leisha Hailey maintains she did not kiss her female partner in an inappropriate manner before they were removed from a Southwest Airlines flight on Monday.

Hailey, a former star of the TV series The L Word, and Camila Grey, her partner and bandmate in the group Uh Huh Her, released a statement Tuesday in which they said they "were not making out or creating any kind of spectacle of ourselves" on the flight leaving from El Paso, Texas, for Los Angeles.

They said, "[I]t was one, modest kiss. We are responsible adult women who walk through the world with dignity. We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple."

Hailey and Grey say that while they take full responsibility for "getting verbally upset" with the flight attendant who allegedly told them before they got kicked off the plane that Southwest was a family airline, they are not apologizing for the incident.  They say they are in the process of filing a formal complaint with the airline.

After releasing their statement, the couple denied via their band's Twitter account that their dispute with Southwest was merely a publicity stunt.

Southwest has said it received several passenger complaints regarding "excessive" behavior by Hailey and Grey.

Former 'L Word' Star Kicked off Plane for Kissing Her Girlfriend

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) -- An openly gay actress who starred on the TV series The L Word says she was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight Monday for kissing her female partner.

Leisha Hailey tweeted, "Flt. attendant said that it was a 'family' airline and kissing was not ok."

She wrote that she and her partner were escorted off the plane "for getting upset about the issue."

Hailey demanded a refund and a public apology from Southwest Airlines, adding, "Hate is not a family value. I will never fly this airline."

After the Twitter account for her music group, Uh Huh Her, retweeted what she wrote, Southwest Airlines tweeted an apology and ask her to contact them so it could look into the matter.

However, the airline later said in a statement obtained by TMZ.com, "Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive.  Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. "

Hailey played Alice Pieszecki on The L Word.  Her recent TV credits include CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Drop Dead Diva and American Dad!
