Zooey Deschanel Responds to 'Snobby Cow' Accusation

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- Zooey Deschanel is an actress, a singer, and, according to the author of an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times, a "snobby cow." The author, Patt Morrison, flamed the (500) Days of Summer star for a comment she allegedly made at the star-studded British Academy of Film and Television Arts event in L.A. attended by Prince William and Kate Middleton on Saturday night.

In her piece, Morrison links to a USA Today article which reports that Deschanel was "worried" that the area surrounding the gala, held at the Belasco Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, may not have been nice enough for the royal couple. USA Today quotes her as saying at the event, "I just don't want them to see the worst of L.A."

Morrison, who assumed that Deschanel was referring to the homeless people in the area, criticizes the actress for allegedly having a holier-than-thou attitude, writing, "Of course there are thousands of down-and-out folks in downtown L.A. I cannot apologize enough to Ms. Deschanel that in some places, the sidewalks do not smell like Jo Malone candles." The author goes on to detail the charitable deeds of the royal couple while they were in Los Angeles.

The 31-year-old Deschanel defended herself in an open letter posted on a website she recently co-founded, HelloGiggles.com. She claims her quote was taken out of context and that she was jokingly referring to a nearby parking lot that contained a lot of trash. She tells Morrison in her letter, "I am completely and utterly shocked that a professional journalist, whom I have never met, would take a partial quote out of context and use it as the basis for a misguided personal attack. Further, I find it appalling that you would resort to name-calling to get your point across."
