Mariah Carey Stars in ABC Christmas Special

Photo Courtesy - Island Def Jam Music Group/Disney/ABC Television Group(LOS ANGELES) -- Mariah Carey is working hard for the title of Most Festive Pop Star.  After releasing her new album Merry Christmas II You, topping the charts with "Oh Santa!" and singing at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in New York City, she's starring in her own ABC holiday special on Monday night.

The special, Merry Christmas to You, was taped last month at the Orpheum Theater in L.A. and it features Carey singing Christmas classics old and new, as well as helping to make some of her fans' holiday wishes come true.  She also welcomes a couple of special guests: Randy Jackson, who plays bass on "Here Comes Santa Claus," and her own mother, Patricia Carey, an opera singer.  Mom and daughter duet on a medley of "O Come All ye Faithful" and "Hallelujah Chorus," which is also featured on Mariah's new Christmas CD.

Carey also performs "Oh Santa!" on the special -- that's the opening number -- as well as a handful of other songs from Merry Christmas II You.  She also features some songs she recorded on her first holiday album, back in 1994, and closes the show with "All I Want for Christmas is You."

Merry Christmas II You airs at 9 p.m. EST.

Mariah Carey Releases New Christmas CD

Photo Courtesy - Island Def Jam Records(NEW YORK) -- Mariah Carey's second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You, hits stores on Tuesday.

She says she was "trying to bring it up a couple notches" with the new record, which includes her imaginative rearrangements of holiday classics, some brand-new songs, and an "extra-festive" new version of her smash hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You."  Carey's mom Patricia, an opera singer, even makes a cameo appearance.

The first single, "Oh Santa!," is currently number one on the Billboard holiday songs chart.

The singer says that in making Merry Christmas II You, "I was really inspired by Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole...we wanted to make some of the ballads feel like the way those songs...make you feel, 'OK, this is a beautiful Christmas moment.'  So it was all about doing that, and keeping it festive and young and timeless at the same time."

Carey will promote her new album with an ABC Christmas special airing Dec. 13.  Called Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You, it'll feature her singing the music from the new album, and helping make Christmas wishes come true for some "very special fans."  The special will shoot in Los Angeles on Nov 6.
