Naomi Campbell Accuses Cadbury Ad of Being Racist

Brand X Pictures/Thinkstock(LONDON) -- An ad from the Cadbury chocolate company referencing Naomi Campbell has drawn complaints from some, including Campbell herself, who claim it's racist. The ad features a picture of Cadbury's new chocolate bar, Bliss, underneath the caption, "Move over Naomi, there's a new diva in town."

Campbell says she was shocked by the ad, which appeared in U.K. newspapers last week. She's quoted by Britain's The Independent as saying, "It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful." She says she is considering "every option available" against Cadbury, which is owned by Kraft. Furthermore, the British activist group Operation Black Vote has reached out to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, asking for their support.

Cadbury contends that its ad was "a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss." However, the company notes that the ad is "no longer in circulation" and that it has no plans to "repeat the campaign."
