Lost Hitchcock Film Found in New Zealand Archive

CBS Photo Archives/Getty Images(AUCKLAND, New Zealand) -- The National Film Preservation Foundation and the New Zealand Film Archive announced Wednesday the discovery of a lost film by famed director Alfred Hitchcock.

The White Shadows, which dates back to 1923, was reportedly found mislabeled in a New Zealand archive. The work shows Hitchcock's distinctive, expressionistic style, and his latent talent for set design, composition, and dramatic lighting. The 24-year-old Hitchcock is listed as the writer, assistant director, editor and production designer for the film.

Only three of six reels -- about 30 minutes -- have survived. The film tells the story of a femme fatale named Nancy who becomes involved in seedy Parisian nightlife. Betty Compson plays the dual role of Nancy and her angelic twin sister.

The movie will have a "premiere" in September at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.
