(LONDON) -- Here's a surprise: if Pete Townshend could have done it differently, he says he never would have played guitar for The Who -- or any band, for that matter. It's not, however, because he doesn't like his band mates. In a special issue of Uncut magazine, Townshend declares, "I would never have joined a band," adding, "I am quite a good gang member and a good trooper on the road, I am bad at creative collaboration." Townshend says that he thinks a better move for him would have been to go the solo artist route, comparing himself to Brian Eno.
Townshend also says becoming a solo artist would have been much better for his health. "My ears, right wrist and shoulder would work more efficiently. In all other respects I am in extremely good shape," he says. Townshend, who turns 66 in May, suffers from an extreme case of tinnitus and has lost much of his hearing over the years.
