'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Opens Friday

Comstock Images/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the only film opening in wide release Friday.

His former Pirates co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley did not join him for the fourth film in the popular Disney franchise, but Penelope Cruz is on board as the pirate Angelica.

Sparrow's latest adventure has him searching for the Fountain of Youth while dealing with the famed pirate Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane.  Geoffrey Rush also returns as Jack Sparrow's nemesis, Hector Barbossa, in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is screening in 3D.

The film is rated PG-13.

Movie Review: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'

Jason LaVeris/FlimMagic(NEW YORK) -- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was such a bad movie that all Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had to do was show up and it would be an improvement. With the bar set low and a new director in Chicago's Rob Marshall, the prospects for achieving something close to the fantastic first Pirates movie seemed somewhat promising.

A good start to improving any movie franchise is adding Ian McShane. As Blackbeard, he’s brimming with evil aspirations and need not open his mouth for the audience to see what’s lurking in his soul.  Unfortunately, that’s about as deep as this movie gets. The rest is a palette of eye-popping special effects, mildly amusing one-liners from Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, and gratuitous shots of Penelope Cruz's cleavage. Obviously, Geoffrey Rush does a fine job as Barbossa but there are too many characters and not enough character development for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to be truly satisfying.

Three out of five stars.
