Sitar Player, George Harrison Collaborator Ravi Shankar Dead at 92

Kevin Winter/WireImage (NEW YORK) -- Legendary Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, perhaps best known as a collaborator and friend of former Beatles member George Harrison, died in a U.S. hospital on Tuesday, according to the Hindustan Times.  Other reports state Shankar was in San Diego at the time of his death.

He reportedly was hospitalized last Thursday after suffering from a breathing problem.  Shankar was 92.

Shankar's association with Harrison began in the 1960s.  Together, they organized 1971's Concert for Bangladesh, held at New York's Madison Square Garden.  Two years later, Harrison signed Shankar to his Dark Horse Records label, for which they collaborated on various projects.

Shankar and his daughter, sitar player Anoushka Shankar, appeared at the 2002 tribute Concert for George in London.

Shankar was also the father of Grammy-winning musician Norah Jones.

Shankar won three Grammys in his career.  He was also nominated for an Oscar for contributing the score to the 1982 movie Gandhi.
