'Real Steel' Edges 'Footloose' for Top Spot at the Box Office

Comstock Images/Thinkstock(LOS ANGELES) -- The Hugh Jackman robot boxing flick Real Steel earned an estimated $16.3 million over the weekend to edge out the Footloose remake, which opened in the runner-up spot, with $16.1 million.

The horror prequel The Thing debuted in third place, collecting $8.7 million. The Steve Martin-Jack Black-Owen Wilson comedy The Big Year was a big flop, finishing in ninth place, with $3.3 million.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

1. Real Steel, $16.3 million.
2. Footloose, $16.1 million.
3. The Thing, $8.7 million.
4. The Ides of March, $7.5 million.
5. Dolphin Tale, $6.3 million.
6. Moneyball, $5.5 million.
7. 50/50, $4.3 million.
8. Courageous, $3.4 million.
9. The Big Year, $3.3 million.
10. The Lion King, $2.7 million.

'Real Steel' Tops the Box Office with $27.3 Million

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Real Steel was a knockout at the box office this past weekend, debuting in the number one spot with an estimated $27.3 million, number one finish.

The movie stars Hugh Jackman as a former boxer during a time when the sport is ruled by robot fighters. He joins his estranged son in building and training a robot for a championship.

George Clooney’s political drama, The Ides of March, opened in second place with $10.4 million.  The country’s previous number one movie, Dolphin Tale, slipped to number three with $9.2 million in estimated ticket sales.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

1. Real Steel, $27.3 million.
2. The Ides of March, $10.4 million.
3. Dolphin Tale, $9.2 million.
4. Moneyball, $7.5 million.
5. 50/50, $5.5 million.
6. Courageous, $4.6 million.
7. The Lion King, $4.55 million.

'Real Steel,' 'The Ides of March' Open Friday

-- Real Steel: Hugh Jackman's Charlie is a down-and-out former boxer during a time when the sport is ruled by robot fighters.  He joins his estranged son in building and training a robot that has a chance to compete for a championship. Evangeline Lilly also stars.  Rated PG-13.  [Click here to read a review]

-- The Ides of March: Ryan Gosling is a press secretary for a governor, running for president, played by George Clooney.  As an important Ohio primary draws near, Gosling's Stephen is pulled into a political scandal.  Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright also star in the drama, which was directed by Clooney.  Rated R.
