Painter Cy Twombly Dies in Rome

Francois Guillot/Getty Images(LONDON) -- American painter Cy Twombly died in Rome on Tuesday at the age of 83.

The painter, who was known for his large scale abstract canvases that made use of calligraphy and words, moved to Italy in the 1950s and made Europe the center of his career.

Twombly had reportedly been battling cancer prior to his death, although the official cause of death has not been confirmed.
