Russell Brand on Marriage: 'I Tried It and I Loved It'

Photo by Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Russell Brand says he still hopes to be married one day -– just not today.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, the actor says, "I'd like to be married. I'm just not transmitting that frequency of 'Soulmate! Soulmate!' I’m transmitting the frequency of 'Mmm!'"

Referring to his nearly two-year marriage to Katy Perry, Brand says, "I tried it and I loved it."

Brand says their divorce had nothing to do with her character. "I really think she's a lovely, beautiful person...It's just hard isn't it? She's got a lot of options, I’ve got a lot of options, so you've got to really, really want it."

As for what triggered their split, Brand admitted it was partly due to adjusting to a different pace of life then they were used to and prioritizing their respective lives and careers.  "Some of it's the fame, but I think getting married is…you've got a whole other person that you’ve got to make as important as you."

Russell Brand: ‘Incompatibility’ Led to Katy Perry Split

Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage(SYDNEY) -- Ever since Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s very public divorce in December, the former heroin addict turned movie star has slowly been opening up about what exactly caused the split with the “Fireworks” singer.

“Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it don’t,” Brand told Australia’s 60 Minutes about the relationship.  “But if you sort of sense there’s an incompatibility, then in any relationship regardless of the status of the individual, it kind of is best to go separate ways.”

Brand also hinted that he and Perry had little interests in common.  Reports after the split stated Perry’s partying and reluctance to have a baby right away may have been a contributing factor.

“I think if you’re someone who’s really into mountain biking, it would be good to go out with someone else who’s into mountain biking, and if you’re really into Eastern mysticism, go out with someone else who into Eastern mysticism,” Brand said.  “I think if you’re a devoted tennis professional and you get married to a crystal meth addict, you might have trouble.  I’ve been in a lot of trouble.”

Brand and Perry married in India in 2010, but 14 months later Brand filed for divorce.  Their divorce was finalized in July.  Perry chronicled much of the split in her documentary Part of Me.

“I thought it would have been strange if I had completely avoided it, because it’s, sometimes, you know, when there’s a problem, it’s not about the problem, it’s how you solve it.  And you can’t avoid an elephant in the room, of course,” Perry told ABC News’ Elizabeth Vargas in July.

“But I wanted to be very diligent and respectful about it.  And hopefully, you know, people see that problem and they see me having that problem, they’re like, ‘Oh.  Well, even she can’t dodge life’s curve balls.  Even at that level.’  And they can relate to me better.  That’s what I want is, I want that human connection, especially with my fans,” she said.

Is Russell Brand Dating Spice Girl Geri Halliwell?

Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Russell Brand is going from a California gurl to a spice girl.  The Sun quotes a source as saying Brand and Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, are involved in a “very serious” romance.

The report says Brand fell for Halliwell while they both were attending rehearsals for the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics.

“I’ve got a crush on Geri Halliwell -- everything in the world is how it should be,” Brand said after the finale.

The Sun says the actor dumped Isabella Brewster, the younger sister of Dallas and Fast & Furious actress Jordana Brewster, earlier this month so he could be with Halliwell.  Brand and Katy Perry divorced earlier this year.

The Sun reports Brand and Halliwell have gone on a number of dates, including an outing this past weekend that included the 40-year-old Spice Girl’s 6-year-old daughter, Bluebell Madonna.

A close friend of the 37-year-old Brand tells the tabloid, “Things are getting very serious between them --they’re a proper couple now.  They had met several times in the past, but really got to know each other during the Olympics.”

The pal continues, “They just clicked -- they have so much in common.  He is spending so much more time in London just to be with her.”

Halliwell appears to have changed her view of Brand since an encounter backstage at a 2008 Spice Girls show when she declared, “He’s really funny and intelligent but not the type of man I go for.”

Halliwell said of Brand’s appearance, “I’d love to shave off all that crazy hair.”

Russell Brand Gets Community Service, Fine in Phone Tossing Case

Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Russell Brand will not be going to jail for tossing a photographer’s iPhone through the window of a building in New Orleans on March 12.

An attorney representing Brand entered a not guilty plea Thursday on the actor's behalf to one count of misdemeanor criminal damage to property, but then worked out a deal with prosecutors that calls for the star to perform 20 hours of community service and pay $500 in court fees.

The charge will be dismissed if Katy Perry's ex completes his community service by Aug. 31.

Russell Brand Billboard Vandalized by Katy Perry Fan

Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Even after his highly-publicized divorce from Katy Perry was finalized in February, Russell Brand told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that he still loves the pop star.

Katy Perry’s fans, however, do not seem to love Brand back, and one of them figured out a clever way to steal the comedian’s thunder.

Brand, 36, is in the headlines this week for his new show, Late Night ReBranded, a comedy show set to premier tonight on FX. When a billboard for the show popped up on Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard a “wide awake” Perry fan took the chance to redesign the sign.

“I would rather watch the Katy Perry movie,” the as-yet-unnamed vandal wrote with spray-paint on the sign.  The story was first reported by TMZ.

Perry’s movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me,  is a first for the 27-year-old singer, a 3-D movie spectacle set to open July 5 in which she doesn’t leave anything hidden from the cameras, including her divorce from Brand.

“I thought it would have been strange if I had completely avoided it,” she told ABC News’ Elizabeth Vargas in an interview this week.  “You know, when there’s a problem, it’s not about the problem, it’s how you solve it. And you can’t avoid an elephant in the room, of course.”

Brand, 37, filed for divorce from Perry in December, citing irreconcilable differences. The two had been married for 14 months, and it was rumored he wanted her to cut back on her partying.

Russell Brand Says of Katy Perry: ‘I Still Love Her’

MARK RALSTON/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After dodging questions about his notably public divorce from pop star Katy Perry, and heckling a fan who taunted him about his ex at a recent stand-up show, comedian Russell Brand has broken his silence about his failed marriage with a pointed confession.

“I still love her as a human being, but sometimes when you’re in a relationship, I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it,” he said Thursday during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“I was very happy to be married to her. She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her,” Brand added.

The 36-year-old comedian filed for divorce from Perry, 27, in December, citing irreconcilable differences. The two had been married for 14 months, and it was rumored he wanted her to cut back on her partying.

“The interesting thing about what Russell said now is this is what I’ve been hearing all along from sources,” Ian Drew of Us Weekly magazine told ABC’s Good Morning America. “That Russell and Katy didn’t really have this big crashing animosity, that what really was at fault in the relationship … Russell realized she wasn’t at a place where he was in his life.”

Fresh off the divorce, Perry expressed her pain freely in February on stage at the Grammy Awards, performing the song “Part of Me.” Many believe the lyrics were aimed at Brand.

Up until now, Brand has been quiet about the split, but it has been rumored that he sent her an email expressing regret about the breakup.

But Drew said Brand never reached out to Perry.

“We should hang up the notion that Katy and Russell are going to reconcile,” he said. “They are doing what many people should be doing, which is splitting and ending things on a good note.”

Perry previously “unfollowed” Russell on Twitter.

The pair was married in October 2010, but split last December.

Perry was spotted with Florence + the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd at the Coachella festival last month and recently tweeted, “All I need in this life of sin is me and my kitten,” a lyrical variation of the Beyonce and Jay-Z re-make of “Bonnie and Clyde.”

Russell Brand Gives Heckler Verbal Beat Down

Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Comedian Russell Brand’s stand-up show this past weekend made headlines, but not for his routine. It was what he did off-script that has people talking.

Brand, the eccentric recent ex-husband of pop star Katy Perry, apparently grew frustrated by a male heckler who kept shouting Perry’s name during a show at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday. The 36-year-old actor then unleashed a verbal thrashing on the unfortunate audience member.

Calling for the lights to be turned on, Brand jumped off the stage and walked up the theater floor to confront the offending audience member.

“Let’s see you, mate. Let’s see how your mental illness looks in the daylight. It’s you, is it? Oh, dear.  I was hoping that your personality was as a result of physical beauty. I thought, ‘this guy’s confident probably because he’s incredibly handsome,’ but look at you! You look like someone who’s fallen off the outside of a church,” he said.

The insults continued, with the comedian casting aspersion on the heckler’s sexual prowess, telling him he had the physical appearance of an ape and saying his mind contained a bizarre combination of "alcohol and idiocy."

“They say of course, don’t they, that empty vessels make the most noise,” Brand went on. “What an enormous echo of nothingness from you … I think silence is your friend. I think keep your lips firmly, firmly clamped together, because everything that comes out of your mouth, from your idiotic announcements to your disgusting halitosis which is cutting through this room is an abomination.”

The delighted audience laughed, clapped, cheered and whistled at Brand’s roasting of the heckler.

The 36-year-old comedian filed for divorce from Perry, 27, in December, citing irreconcilable differences. The two had been married only 14 months, and it was rumored he wanted her to cut back on her partying.

But new reports suggest the comedian may have had a change of heart about the split. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Brand became jealous after seeing photos of Perry cozying up to Florence and the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd. Brand sent Perry an email in which he admitted he gave up on the marriage too soon.
