Sean Penn, Oliver Stone Mourn Death of Hugo Chavez

Michael Tran/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- Sean Penn and Oliver Stone, two vocal supporters of controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, released statements following Chavez's death on Tuesday at the age of 58.

"Today the people of the United States lost a friend it never knew it had.  And poor people around the world lost a champion," Penn said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.  "I lost a friend I was blessed to have.  My thoughts are with the family of President Chavez and the people of Venezuela."

Penn, who appeared at a December candlelight vigil for the cancer-stricken leader, added, "Venezuela and its revolution will endure under the proven leadership of Vice President Maduro."

Oliver Stone, who championed Chavez in his 2009 film South of the Border, said on Tuesday, ''I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place."

Stone's statement continues, "Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history."  He closed his comments with, "My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned."

Hollywood Stars Join President Bill Clinton in 'Funny or Die' Video

William J. Clinton Foundation (HOLLYWOOD) -- Former President Bill Clinton may no longer be the most powerful man in the world, but he still has enough pull to get Hollywood A-listers to join him in a new Funny or Die video that pokes fun at his charitable foundation.

The five-minute video, entitled Clinton Foundation: Celebrity Brainstorm, features the former president and an all-star cast that includes Ted Danson, Ben Stiller,  Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Mary Steenburgen, and Sean Penn making up the Clinton Foundation’s Celebrity Division.

They stars are shown struggling to come up with creative new initiatives, including an international bake sale and starting a softball team. Jack Black pitches a theme song for the charity organization, which Clinton himself applauds on speakerphone -- until Kevin Spacey is shown on the other end, pranking the group with a spot-on imitation of the former president. Clinton himself catches Spacey in the act, and admonishes him only for making the prank call without him.

Christin Trogan, who produced the video, tells The Hollywood Reporter each star dedicated about two hours to the project, and it was shot over five days last month.

Incidentally, President Clinton's wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has been friends with Steenburgen for decades. The first couple attended she and Danson's 1995 wedding.

Sean Penn: Charlie Sheen Has a Lot to Offer Haiti

Jeff Vespa/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- After his whirlwind week of media appearances, Charlie Sheen says he'll now be focusing his exceptional energy in one of the last places you'd expect: the ongoing Haitian relief effort.

Speaking with Access Hollywood on Friday, Sheen said that he and his friend Sean Penn were planning a trip to Haiti and that he wants to help focus the attention of the world back on the devastated Caribbean nation.

He did not indicate when they would be leaving.

According to Oscar winner and long-time Sheen friend Sean Penn, the troubled actor has a lot to offer the island country that was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January 2010 that killed an estimated 316,000 people.

"I think his energies, intelligence and passion could be both of service and servicing to him, as it is to all who are touched by the struggle of the Haitian people," Penn said in a statement Friday.

"Charlie is one of the very few public people who cannot be accused of using the media to his own benefit. I would very much like to show my old friend the world of needs on the ground in Haiti, and introduce him and his tremendous wit to our hard working Haitian staff," Penn added.

Since the earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, Penn has become a major spokesman of relief efforts to help the estimated 1.3 million people who lost their homes.

"If [Sheen] chooses to give support, I'll trust it," Penn said of Sheen.
