Shakira Expecting First Child

RCA Records(NEW YORK) -- Shakira's womb doesn't lie -- the singer is expecting her first child.

In a message on her Facebook page, Shakira writes, "As some of you may know, Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby! At this time we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days ... Big kiss! And will see you very soon!"

The baby daddy is Gerard Piqué, a center back who plays for the FC Barcelona soccer team, as well as for Spain's national soccer team.  She officially confirmed their relationship on March 29, 2011, when she posted a picture of the two of them on her Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Shakira was due to perform at a music festival this weekend in Las Vegas but has now canceled those plans.  It's unclear how her pregnancy will affect her plans to fill in for Cee Lo Green on the next season of The Voice.

Shakira Blames Cell Phone for Sea Lion Attack

VALERY HACHE/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Colombian pop star Shakira and a vivacious sea lion where not “meant to be together.”

The star, known for her hits such as “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie,” took to Facebook on Sunday to dish that a sea lion attacked her while she was on an adventure tour in Cape Town, South Africa, last weekend.

Shakira said she was moving closer to where some seals and sea lions had gathered near the rocks along the shoreline to take photos with her Blackberry phone when the incident happened.

“Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me,” Shakira wrote on her Facebook fan page.

“Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.”

Shakira said she and her brother both scratched their hands and legs on the rocks as they tried to get away from the animal. She posted a photo of her injured left hand on her Facebook page.

The singer said she thought the sea lion lunged at her because it was attracted to the sunlight reflecting off her Blackberry screen.

“I believe it confused the reflection of the BlackBerry phone I was taking pics with, with some sort of fish. It thought I was teasing it with food,” she wrote.

Shakira continued the adventure tour and posted on Twitter Sunday that she later spent some time with penguins.

“Definitely friendlier,” she wrote.

Obama Appoints Shakira to Hispanic Education Commission

John Parra/WireImage(WASHINGTON) -- Who says that pop stars can’t be academic role models?

With education reform on a list of high priorities for the White House, President Obama has enlisted the help of pop star Shakira to sit on President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics -- a four-person group that will give advice to the president and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

The Grammy Award-winning musician is perhaps most famous for her hit album She Wolf, which sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.

“Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, record producer and dancer,” said the White House in a statement. “In addition to her career in music, Ms. Mebarak Ripoll has been involved in a number of global educational efforts.”

Perhaps Shakira is a closet bookworm. She secretly attended UCLA back in 2009 disguised as a man, wearing a baseball cap to class, and even her professor wasn’t aware of her identity until after she finished the class.
