Sinead O’Connor Cancels Tour Due to ‘Serious Breakdown’

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(LONDON) -- After canceling her upcoming tour Monday, Irish singer Sinead O’Connor took to Facebook to explain why. In a wall post, she apologized and said she was “very unwell” because of her bipolar disorder.

The announcement came on the heels of a public breakdown for the 45-year-old singer famous for her 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Last December, O’Connor married for the fourth time and then split with her new husband 16 days later. In January, the singer-songwriter sent out desperate tweets to fans as she tried to locate a therapist after she’d tried to commit suicide, according to the U.K.’s Sun.

O’Connor revealed five years ago on Oprah that she had bipolar disorder and had previously attempted suicide in 1999.

In Monday’s post, the singer said she had not fully recovered from her winter breakdown.

“I had been advised by my doctor not to go on tour but didn’t want to ‘fail’ or let anyone down,” O’Connor said in her post. “Very stupidly, I ignored his advice to my great detriment.”

O’Connor’s new album, How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?  was released in February.

Sinead O’Connor Tried to Commit Suicide

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(LONDON) -- Something’s wrong with Sinead O’Connor. She tried to commit suicide twice within the last week.

“I took an overdose,” the 45-year-old singer told The Sun newspaper, not explaining what exactly she overdosed on.

While in Los Angeles last Thursday, O'Connor took an overdose.  Then earlier this week, after receiving treatment for a broken ankle in Ireland, she attempted suicide again, The Sun reports.

O’Connor posted a series of desperate tweets Wednesday, asking her followers to help her find “a psychiatrist who can help me today.”  ”i desperately need to get back on meds today,” she wrote. “am in serious danger.”

Fans came to her rescue. She thanked them hours after posting her original messages, got in touch with a psychiatrist and got medication.

“I just had to make a cry for help,” she told The Sun. "God obviously wants me around -- though I can’t think why.”

The mother of four got married for a fourth time last month, split from her new husband after 16 days, then got back together with him last week. In 2007, O’Connor revealed on Oprah that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2003 and had attempted suicide in 1999.

Sinead O’Connor’s Marriage Ends after 16 Days

Samir Hussein/Getty Images(LAS VEGAS) -- Sinead O’Connor’s fourth marriage lasted about as long as the honeymoon.

The Irish singer announced her split from Barry Herridge on Monday. In a heartfelt message on her blog, she revealed that she and Herridge lived together as man and wife for seven days before ending their relationship for good on Christmas Eve – 16 days after they wed in Las Vegas.

O’Connor blamed “intense pressure” placed on her husband by members of his inner circle, and her “wild” journey to find marijuana on the night of their nuptials. Herridge, an addiction counselor for children, apparently frowned on the latter.

“Within three hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband’s life,” the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer wrote. “And also by a bit of a wild ride I took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night, as I don’t drink. My husband was enormously wounded and very badly effected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage.”

Though she still loves her husband “very much,” O’Connor said she realized he would be sacrificing too much to stay with her and was ending the marriage because “he is too nice to do so. And too nice to trap.”

While admitting that she “rushed into getting married,” the singer said she planned to “get on with being fully me. With never an apology for ANY part if being FULLY ME. No matter what.”

O’Connor married Herridge on Dec. 8, her 45th birthday, three months after they’d met.
