David Letterman Jokes about Online Threat on 'Late Show'

Ray Tamarra/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- In his first show after returning from vacation to CBS' Late Show on Monday, David Letterman squeezed a few jokes out of the apparent threat on his life issued on a jihadist website.

Letterman quipped at the start of the show that the audience would serve as his "human shield."  He added that he'd spoken with a network executive backstage and "We were going through the CBS life insurance policy to see if I was covered for jihad."

Letterman then explained, "A guy, a radical extremist, threatened to cut my tongue out.  I wish I had a nickel for every time a guy has threatened [that]...I think the first time was during the Academy Awards."  Letterman famously fell flat with critics as host of the 1995 Oscars telecast.

Letterman further joked that the State Department was investigating who posted the threat, but, he said, "everybody knows it's [Jay] Leno."

The threat even inspired the night's top ten list: "Top Ten Thoughts That Went Through My Mind After Hearing About the Threat."  Among the items on the list: "How can someone be so angry at a time when Kim Kardashian is so happy?"  Kardashian got married last weekend.

Last week, the SITE Intelligence Group reported that a contributor to the jihadist website, apparently outraged over a joke made by Letterman on his show about the death of an Osama bin Laden lieutenant, encouraged others to "cut the tongue of the lowly Jew."  Incidentally, Letterman is not Jewish.
