Van Halen to Play the Super Bowl?

Steve Granitz/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- Speculation began circulating in the media recently that Van Halen may be the next high-profile artist to headline a Super Bowl halftime show, and now the band's frontman, David Lee Roth, has come forward to address the rumors.

The Van Halen News Desk fan site has posted an open letter from the singer in which he declares, "Be still my pigskin heart.  That honor has not been bestowed upon us at this time, though it is one we would accept in a NY minute."

Roth continues, "Having heard VH blaring through stadium speakers on any given Sunday -- more like every given Sunday -- the idea of playing there live would be like, 'okay, now we're in the game.'"

The singer goes on to describe the Super Bowl halftime gig as "a veritable holy grail of musical recognition, a highly prized rite of passage for (game-changing) artists."

He concludes by saying, "It's an honor to be considered and for that we would like to thank the rumormongers all over the World Wide Web."

Rumors about Van Halen playing at next year's sports extravaganza sprung up after the band canceled a lengthy portion of its announced North American tour.  In the wake of the cancellations, guitarist Eddie Van Halen told USA Today, "In the new year we'll possibly do something special but I can't talk about it."

The next Super Bowl will take place February 3, 2013, at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Van Halen Announces Official Album and Tour Details

Steve Granitz/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- Van Halen has confirmed details about their hotly anticipated new studio effort and plans for a major North American tour to support the recording. The album will be titled A Different Kind of Truth and, as expected, will hit stores on February 7. The first single will be called "Tattoo" and will be released on Tuesday, the same day a video for the tune will premiere.

The tour will kick off February 18 in Louisville, Kentucky, and is scheduled to wind its way around the U.S. and Canada through a June 26 show in New Orleans. So far, 46 dates have been confirmed.  In a bit of a curveball, funk veterans Kool & the Gang will serve as the opening act on select stops on the tour. Tickets for the trek will go on sale starting January 14.

Van Halen celebrated their new album and tour with an intimate show at New York City's Café Wha? on Thursday night.  In front of an estimated 250 people, mostly member of the media, the quartet -- David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen -- delivered a blistering 11-song set made up almost entirely of the rock legends' classic early material. They only performed one new song, titled "She's the Woman."  Upon hitting the stage Roth -- clad in brown overalls and a flat cap -- quipped, "Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, ladies and gentlemen."

Roth interrupted the show throughout to offer up witticisms and reminiscences, at one point remarking, "The last time I stood on a stage this low, I had to have the car back by midnight."  The entire band seemed to be having a great time, especially the frontman, who commented more than once that he thought the concert was one of his best ever.  Roth also took time to introduce his 92-year-old uncle, Manny Roth, who used to own the venue during the 1960s.

The singer recalled carving his name in the basement club's banister when he was seven years old.  "This is a temple, he said. "This is a very special place."

Here's the set list from Van Halen's Café Wha? show:

"You Really Got Me"
"Runnin' with the Devil"
"Somebody Get Me a Doctor"
"Everybody Wants Some"
"She's the Woman"
"Dance the Night Away"

Van Halen Confirms Plans for a 2012 Tour

Steve Granitz/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- It's official, Van Halen fans!  The rock legends have revealed via a series of trailers posted on Van-Halen.com that they will head out on the road in 2012.

The black-and-white clips each show a montage of footage of the band members -- David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen -- rocking out on a soundstage as segments of their various classic tunes play in the background.  In addition, a scrolling banner moves across the bottom of the screen announcing: "Van Halen on tour 2012.  First tickets on sale January 10."

According to Blabbermouth.net, the promos were shot on Nov. 14 at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, Calif., and are believed to feature footage that also will be part of the official video for a new Van Halen song.  A new studio album from the band is expected out sometime next year, possibly as early as February.

Sammy Hagar Wants to Record with Van Halen Again

FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar says he would get back into a recording studio with his former bandmates.

Hagar spoke to Rolling Stone to promote his forthcoming autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, and said, "I would love to make another record with Van Halen. If Eddie was totally cool and was back to the guy I used to know, or a new guy, not the guy I knew the last time."

In Hagar's book, the Red Rocker says he's completely open with all the details of what went on during his time in Van Halen. Hagar says he wasn't worried about "burning bridges" because "If you choose to write an autobiography, which I did, then you only have one shot."

Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock is in stores on March 15.
