(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr has died. TMZ.com reports his body was found in a home in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday. His father tells TMZ, "It's a terrible shock and tragedy." Starr was 44 years old.
A brief post on the official Alice in Chains website, titled "Mike Starr (1966-2011)" reads, "Jerry [Cantrell] and Sean [Kinney] are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy -- and the privacy of the Starr family -- during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family."
Starr was a founding member of Alice in Chains and was featured on their first two albums. He left the group in 1993. He appeared on VH1's Celebrity Rehab in 2009 and was arrested last month in Utah for felony possession of a controlled substance, with police saying he was in possession of painkillers for which he didn't have a prescription.
Former Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley died in April of 2002 at age 34 of an overdose of cocaine and heroin, known as a speedball. He was found dead in his Seattle, Wash. apartment.
