Inception, which received rave reviews from theater-goers but did not win a Golden Globe award, won the WGA award for best original screenplay.

Inside Job, featuring Matt Damon, also won the WGA award for best documentary screenplay.

Although the Golden Globes and Writers Guild Awards can serve as precursors to the Academy Awards, that is not always the case. In 2010, Up In The Air featuring George Clooney won the WGA award for best adapted screenplay, but lost out at the Academy Awards to The Hurt Locker, which was selected as the best picture winner. The Hurt Locker took home best original screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards.

The Academy Awards are scheduled for February 27 in Hollywood.
