“The Conjuring” Scares its Way to First Place at the Box Office

Comstock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Warner Bros.' new horror film The Conjuring took first place at the box office this weekend, while Despicable Me 2 continued to perform well in second place.

The Conjuring, a haunted house film starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, brought in $41.5 million its opening weekend off of a $19.5 million production cost. It was directed by James Wan, best known for his much more gore-filled Saw series, and has mostly received good reviews.

Despicable Me 2 took second, beating newcomers Turbo and Red 2, which opened in third and fifth, respectively. Despicable Me 2 is poised to break the $300 million mark in North America.

The other new opening this weekend was R.I.P.D., starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as ghost cops. The film, which cost $130 million to make, bombed, bringing in just $12.762 million in its opening weekend.

Grown Ups 2 fell to fourth place, while the giant robots versus giant monsters smackdown Pacific Rim dropped to sixth.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com:
