"The Hunger Games" Opens Nationwide Friday

Kevin Winter/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After months of hype, The Hunger Games finally arrived in theaters across the country early Friday.

For those of you who have not read Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel on which the film is based, the story is set in a futuristic North America where teenagers are forced to compete in a ruthless, reality TV-type competition called The Hunger Games.  The contestants’ main objective is to fight for survival.

The protagonist is a 16-year-old girl named Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence.  After her younger sister is drafted into "The Hunger Games," Katniss volunteers to take her place.  She then prepares for the battle of her life with the help of a drunken former champion, Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch Abernathy.

The Hunger Games also stars Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, and Stanley Tucci.  It’s rated PG-13.

The Hunger Games, which is also screening in IMAX theaters, is the only film opening in wide release this weekend.
