"Veronica Mars" Movie Hits $2 Million Goal on Kickstarter in One Day

Eric Charbonneau/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- An online fundraising campaign to help a Veronica Mars film become a reality has surpassed its goal of raising $2 million in one day.

Veronica Mars series creator Rob Thomas started a Kickstarter campaign Wednesday to raise enough money to bring the series to the big screen.

“Here it is. Our one shot to see a Veronica Mars movie happen. Kristen is in. I’m in. Let’s do it!” Thomas wrote on the Kickstarter campaign page.

Veronica Mars was a television series that featured Kristen Bell as a butt-kicking teen detective who helped solve mysteries in the fictional California town of Neptune.

“I promise to give it my all. [I] promise to work my hardest to give everyone a little bit more Veronica, and [I] will be oh so honored to do so,” Bell wrote on the Kickstarter page.

The series debuted in September 2004 and ran for three seasons.

“The average pledge on Kickstarter is $71," Thomas wrote. “Hell, if we could get 30,000 people to give the average donation, we could finance the movie, particularly if the cast and I were willing to work cheap. The most common donation amount on Kickstarter is $25. Surely, 80,000 of our three million viewers would find that price-point viable!”

At 5:55 p.m. (PST), with 31,685 Kickstarter donors contributing, the campaign hit the $2 million mark.

“Hallelujah! It’s a green light my friends. I love you all, but particularly the donors among you. #Veronicamars @IMKristenBell,” Thomas later tweeted.

The film is slated for a 2014 release.

Depending on how much a person contributed, donors could receive a digital version of the film, t-shirts, video greetings and voicemails from the cast, set visits and invitations to the premiere and after-parties.

“Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith’s chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn’t taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling,” Thomas wrote. “My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion. Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make.”
