Will Smith May Star in NFL Concussions Movie

Lloyd Bishop/NBC(LOS ANGELES) -- Hollywood is ready to tackle the NFL’s concussion problem with three projects, including one slated to star Will Smith.

According to Variety, Smith, 45, is in talks to star in an untitled drama based on the GQ article, “Game Brain,” about forensic neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu.

Smith is expected to play Omalu, who first discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a football player while conducting an autopsy on former Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster.

According to Variety, the storyline is described as a whistle-blower’s tale about the high price paid by professional athletes in a business fueled by political, corporate and cultural interests. Ridley Scott’s production company is backing the project.

The untitled feature is only one of the Hollywood projects taking shape that is centered on the NFL and its concussion problem. Others include a film based on the book League Of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth, and the indie drama Game Time Decision, which will star Isaiah Washington as a retired football player suffering from the effects of concussions sustained during his professional career who tries to stop his estranged son from a similar fate.
