(LOS ANGELES) -- Zac Efron seemed to avoid the public pitfalls that some Hollywood child stars find themselves in, but the actor's friends say the 25-year-old had adopted an out-of-control partying lifestyle.
One pal tells People magazine Efron "was partying a lot. It went from bad to worse."
Sources tell the magazine the High School Musical star partied so much, it went on for days and led to a serious drug problem that included cocaine and Molly, an enhanced form of Ecstasy.
"The partying got out of hand," says one friend.
Earlier this month, E! News reported the actor had completed a stint in rehab earlier this year. TMZ reported that Efron had received treatment for cocaine abuse.
Efron will be seen next in Parkland, a movie that centers on Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day of President Kennedy's assasination.
Parkland co-star Marcia Gay Hardin congratulated Efron on his willingness to undergo treatment.
"The fact that he's seeking help only says great things about him," she told People.
