Michigan Marks National HIV Testing Day

(LANSING, Mich.) -- Health officials are urging Michigan residents to get tested for HIV -- this as the state gets set to recognize National HIV Testing Day on Wednesday.

In a statement issued Monday, the state's Department of Community Health said the day will be marked with local health departments and community-based organizations working together to provide HIV testing opportunities for at-risk populations.

Officials said as of April, 19,300 Michigan residents were living with HIV, and of that figure only about 14,800 people have been diagnosed, with the others unaware that they had the disease.
