Aerobic Fitness Benefits Long-Term Memory

Wavebreak Media/Thinkstock(EAST LANSING, Mich.) -- Aerobic fitness is as good for the mind as it is for the body, according to Michigan State University researchers. What’s more, it seems to benefit long-term memory.

In a study of 75 supposedly healthy college students, MSU assistant psychology professor Kimberly Fenn and her team had the participants view various word pairs before putting them on a treadmill a day later to test long-term memory retention.  The test subjects were asked to recall the word pairs.

What Fenn discovered was that people who were determined to be in better shape than other students after an aerobics workout had an easier time recalling the words from a day earlier.

Furthermore, the MSU researchers found that those viewed as significantly out of shape did far worse on the tests to retain information.

The study differs from other experiments, which either test children whose brains are still developing or seniors whose brains are in a state of decline.
