After Reports of Illnesses, FDA Warns Against Use of Uncle Ben's Flavored Rice

iStock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The maker of Uncle Ben's is recalling a certain kind of flavored rice it sells in large batches -- mainly to industrial kitchens in places like schools, hospitals and restaurants.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is trying to figure out if two cases of students having skin reactions and nausea after eating Uncle Ben's Infused Rice Mexican flavor are related.

The first case was in Illinois, where the FDA says the rice had an increased amount of Niacin in it. Too much niacin or Vitamin B3 can lead to skin reactions and nausea.  Students in Texas also got sick after eating Uncle Ben's rice, but the FDA can't explain those cases.

"Out of an abundance of caution," the FDA has warned food service companies and consumers not to use any Uncle Ben's Infused Rice products that are sold in 5- and 25-pound bags.
