Anderson Cooper: "60 Minutes" Assignment Caused Temporary Blindness

Gregg DeGuire/PictureGroup(NEW YORK) -- Anderson Cooper had a health scare during a recent reporting assignment for CBS' 60 Minutes.

He told viewers of his talk show Anderson Live on Tuesday that he spent two hours on the water in Portugal, and his eyeballs got sunburned.

Cooper said he didn't realize it at the time, but later that night he woke up with a burning sensation in his eyes and lost his sight for 36 hours.  He joked about a photo of himself wearing an eye patch, saying it would be his new online dating picture.

The talk show host enlisted the help of NBC’s Dr. Nancy Snyderman to explain to his audience the dangers of retina burn due to sunburn.

Snyderman warned, “Everybody needs sunglasses,” and added that cataracts in later life can be prevented by protecting the eyes from the sun's rays.
