Experts Say Bagged Lettuce Isn't Less Safe than Bulk

iStockphotoThinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Bagged lettuce has been recalled six separate times since April, but experts say it isn't necessarily less safe than bulk lettuce, Health Day reports.

Health experts say that regardless of which product consumers choose to buy, the lettuce should be thoroughly washed at home before eating. Most of the recent recalls were caused by contamination by listeria, a bacteria that thrives even in cold refrigerators, says Health Day.

Food safety tips such as washing hands before and after preparing fresh produce, cleaning surfaces such as countertops and cutting boards, washing the produce at home and never putting produce in the kitchen sink all reduce the risk of contamination, according to Health Day.
