FDA Approves Eye-Area Botox

Peter Cade/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- You can now get Botox injections for frown lines and crow's feet at the same time. The FDA approved the use of the drug to treat wrinkles around the eyes Wednesday. That decision comes 11 years after the approval of injections for lines between eyebrows.

Botox is a drug used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, but has become more popular for its cosmetic use to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles.

According to New York University dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, some women even schedule Botox injections around their pregnancies.

"The know about when they're going to ovulate. They come in and get their treatment and then they go off and get pregnant and they're fine," she said.

But despite the sweeping popularity of Botox, Day says the backing of regulators is significant in patients' decision to get the injections.

"It may make patients more comfortable when they're having a treatment close to the eyes that they have the FDA approval," said Dr. Day, who administers the injections.

Some critics of Botox have said the injections often make patients look frozen. But Day says when done correctly, the results can be quite natural-looking.

"When Botox is done well, you look like the best version of you. You don't look done. You can still move and you feel very natural."
