Immune Cells Advance Researchers in Battle Against Leukemia

ABC News(NEW YORK) -- In what could be a major breakthrough in the battle against cancer: researchers have genetically transformed five patients' immune cells into fighters of a deadly type of leukemia. It produced remissions in adults who had run out of chemotherapy options.

ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser says the study represents an important advance for treating this form of leukemia.

"For adults with this cancer … you know, [it's] only a 40 percent survival rate. Here, this is an idea that you might be able to treat and cure people with this disease," he said.
