Manhattan Resident Is World's Oldest Man

ABC News(NEW YORK) -- Alexander Imich may indeed be the world's most interesting man. If nothing else, at age 111 and a quarter, he's the oldest, according to the Gerontology Research Group of Torrance, California.

The New York Times reports Imich was validated as the world's oldest man after Arturo Licata of Italy died last month just a few days shy of his 112th birthday.

A scholar of the occult, Imich grew up a Jew in Poland and escaped Nazi Germany, only to wind up in a gulag when he wouldn't accept Soviet nationality. Imich was eventually freed and then immigrated to the U.S. in 1951.

Now living in Manhattan, Imich was asked about the secret of his longevity. Part of it had to do with not having kids with his late wife. He's also never drank, gave up smoking, played sports and also credited "good genes."

As for his diet, Imich claims to espouse an eastern mystic diet that disdains most foods although his caregivers says he enjoys matzo balls, gefilte fish, chicken noodle soup, Ritz crackers, scrambled eggs, chocolate and ice cream.

Oh, and if the widowed Imich is looking for an older woman, he's got plenty to choose from. The Gerontology Research Group says there are 66 of them currently.
