Sixty Percent of Largest US Cities Smoke Free

Brand X Pictures/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- Smokers can tell you there are fewer places where they're allowed to light up, and now the government has the numbers to prove that.

Indoor smoking bans are now law in 60 percent of the nation's 50 largest cities, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It's a dramatic increase since 2000, when only one large city -- San Jose, California -- forbid smokers from lighting up.

Besides reducing second hand smoke, studies show the laws also help encourage smokers to quit.
