(LONDON) -- A British researcher claims to have established a possible connection between victims of domestic violence and abortion.
After looking at more than 70 studies on the subject, Susan Bewley of Kings College London found that a quarter of women worldwide who’ve terminated their pregnancies were also subject to domestic violence, whether it was physical, sexual or psychological.
Breaking it down further, Bewley and her colleagues say that between 2 and 30 percent of women who had abortions experienced abuse by a partner in the past year while between 14 and 40 percent said they were victimized at some point in their lives.
No cause-and-effect link was determined although Bewley said there is an association between violence and abortion, adding “Novel public health approaches are required to address violence against women and repeat termination.”
She suggested that health care providers can assist women who still might be in abusive relationships.
