Study: Forgiveness Can Have Drawbacks

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Self-help books often sing praises for the act of forgiveness, but new research finds it might be better to withhold your forgiveness sometimes.

It's supposed to be a good thing. Forgiveness can often set you free of anger and angst. But new research from a team at Florida State University suggests forgiveness might have a dark side because it can encourage the person you forgave to do it again.

Researchers found that when spouses forgave their partners immediately, the partner was six and a half times more likely to repeat the bad behavior the next day.  They also found that people who were forced to forgive more often were less happy.
