FDA Approves First Specialized Scorpion Venom Drug

Comstock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the first specialized treatment for scorpion venom.

Anascorp is the first scorpion treatment to be approved in the United States. The dangerous stings are most common in Arizona, and typically occur in young children.

Anascorp testing was done on 15 children with symptoms of scorpion stings. The symptoms resolved within four hours of treatment in the eight subjects who received Anascorp, but in only one of the seven children who received the placebo. The most common side effects were vomiting, fever, rash, nausea, itchiness, headache, runny nose, and muscle pain.
