Possible New Way to Detect Lung Cancer

AbleStock[dot]com/Hemera Technologies(BOSTON) -- Researchers from Boston Medical University say they’ve come up with a new way of detecting lung cancer.

Current methods for diagnosing lung cancer are considered quite invasive, including procedures such as lung biopsies. Researchers conducted a study that involved the analysis of nasal cells of 33 smokers who were undergoing more invasive procedures to determine if they had lung cancer. During the study, the authors say they found that activity of 170 genes differed between the patients who were found to have cancer and those who didn’t have the disease.

In findings presented at an American Thoracic Society meeting, researchers disclosed that they were able to conclude that gene activity analysis from nasal cells could be a non-invasive approach to detect lung cancer in smokers.
