Yeast Infection Drug Linked to Birth Defects, FDA Warns

Comstock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Wednesday that pregnant women taking large, frequent doses of a drug for yeast infections may be at risk of having babies with birth defects, according to HealthDay.

The drug fluconazole, or Diflucan, is used to treat infections in the vagina, mouth and esophagus. The FDA reported that doses between 400 and 800 milligrams a day of the drug during the first trimester can cause rare birth defects.
