Did Guantanamo Doctors Ignore Signs of Torture?

John Moore/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- A review of the medical records of nine individuals held at Guantanamo Bay who alleged abusive interrogation methods found that “the specific allegations of torture are highly consistent with the physical and psychological evidence documented in the medical records.”

The report shows that the medical personnel, instead of investigating the possibility of abusive treatment, commonly recorded physiological symptoms consistent with torture as being due to “personality disorders” and “routine stressors of confinement.”

Authored by individuals either employed or involved with Physicians for Human Rights -- one of whom has served as a medical expert in eight of nine cases -- the study's findings are in contrast to psychological assessments conducted by non-governmental experts who found symptoms fitting major depression and/or post-traumatic stress disorder in all nine cases.

Their findings were published in PLoS Medicine.
