Salmonella Concern Prompts Sprouts Recall

Ryan McVay/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- A voluntary recall has been issued for Evergreen Produce brand sprouts, out of concern that the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, which produces Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts, issued the voluntary recall for those products, saying that the sprouts have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of salmonella poisoning.

As of June 27, there were 21 reported cases of salmonella infections possibly linked to the sprouts.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning may include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems stand a greater risk of developing severe illness from the infection.

The sprouts in question were distributed throughout Idaho, Montana and Washington State. The sprouts come in 4-ounce, 16-ounce and 5-pound bags.

FDA Warns Against Sprouts Possibly Linked to Salmonella

Ryan McVay/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat certain types of Evergreen Produce brand sprouts that may be linked to 20 reported cases of salmonella poisoning.

The sprouts in question include Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa and spicy sprouts distributed throughout Idaho, Montana and Washington State. The sprouts come in 4-ounce, 16-ounce, 1-pound and 5-pound plastic bags.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning may include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems stand a greater risk of developing severe illness from the infection.

Monday’s warning from the FDA covers a different pathogen than the one found in a recent salmonella outbreak that’s plagued parts of Europe.
