Poll Finds Strong Support for New Programs to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) – A poll released Thursday by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health found that a majority of adults in the U.S. would support new programs to prevent teen pregnancy.

"Americans see teen pregnancy as a major health problem,” said poll director Matthew Davis. “They continue to support established ideas such as education about abstinence and birth control.  But it is clear that they are ready to move beyond these traditional approaches to teen pregnancy prevention."

One such approach, said Davis, is the idea of community service requirements to expose teens to the responsibilities involved in parenting and “learn about key aspects of child development, enabling teens to be more successful parents."

A majority of those polled also supported required paternity tests for all pregnancies where public funds are used to care for the mother and the child. Over half said they would also support programs to help keep teenage mothers in school.
