(APTOS, Calif.) – New research suggests that eating tomato products is good for your heart health.
The Tomato Products Wellness Council reports that products such as canned tomatoes, tomato paste and salsa are rich in Lycopene and other antioxidants that may be behind reductions in oxidative stress and inflammation, according to the Illinois Institute of Technology.
"Our research supports that eating a diet rich in particular plant foods that are high in antioxidant compounds like tomato products may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and thus, help reduce the risk of heart disease,” said co-author Britt Burton-Freeman, Ph.D., Director of Nutrition and Health Promoting Foods at the National Center for Food Safety and Technology.
Their findings were backed up by a similar study at the University of California-Davis, which also noted the tomato’s positive effect on blood pressure.
